A monument commemorating the deaths of rail workers during the construction of the Shap section of the Lancaster and Carlisle Railways in the 1840’s, is to be found in the church yard to the North of the building near the main gate.

In memory of those who gave their lives

Completed in 1846, the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway over Shap stands as perhaps the greatest tribute to engineer Joseph Locke.

Thomas Brassey, won the contract with nearly 10,000 men working on the site. Work Commenced at Shap Fell on July 18th 1844.

Men who lost their lives working on the line are buried at St. Michael’s Church, Shap, with a memorial to their work and lives.
