<p>Completed in 1846, the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway over Shap stands as perhaps the greatest tribute to engineer <a title="More about Joseph Locke Engineer" href="http://www.makingthemodernworld.org.uk/people/BG.0121/" target="_blank">Joseph Locke</a>.</p>
<p><a title="About Thomas Brassey" href="http://www.hmag.org.uk/durbarHall/theBrasseyFamily.aspx" target="_blank">Thomas Brassey</a>, won the contract with nearly 10,000 men working on the site. Work Commenced at Shap Fell on July 18th 1844.</p>
<p>Men who lost their lives working on the line are buried at St. Michael&#8217;s Church, Shap, with a memorial to their work and lives.</p>
